Work in a NGO?

Work in a NGO?

By 2018 and 2019, about 600,000 new cases of cancer are expected each year, according to estimates by the National Cancer Institute José Alencar Gomes da Silva (Inca). It is a worrying situation for many patients that become helpless because of public policies failure.

In this sense, the role of the Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) that help cancer patients is extremely important. These entities act on different fronts: they bring health, dignity, comfort and affection to people weakened by the disease.

However, many people who are interested in joining a cancer NGO don’t know how to help. In this post, we show how to participate in an entity like a cancer NGO and the benefits that this attitude can bring to all people involved. Follow and be supportive!

What does a cancer NGO do?

They are entities created to support cancer patients and their families. The work can be done in different ways. Here are some of them:

Donations of money, medicine, clothes and food;

Orientation about the disease also the patient rights;

Offering a place for the family that comes from far away to accompany the treatment of the cancer patient;

Defense of the patient’s rights;

Mobilization regarding public policies;

Confection and donation of wigs for victims of the disease.

Why is it important to be part of those groups?

Because it transforms not only the life of the patient, but also the life of those who help. Check out the benefits of joining a cancer NGO below!

Life Learning

To leave the routine and to know a new reality, with people with needs different from those in your social circle broadens the horizons. With this, you can see beyond and have a life learning.

This is because volunteering in a social organization expands your network of friends and puts the individual in touch with new challenges. It is, therefore, an experience that enriches personal and professional life!

Helping Others

Brazil is a very unequal country and public social and health programs are not able to assist everyone. Cancer patients need help to cope with the disease and seek their rights, as well as a friendly shoulder that can offer affection.

When you participate in a cancer NGO, you become part of a chain of good. Therefore, it is possible to exercise the role of citizen in the best possible way.

Rewarding mission

It is not uncommon to find someone who is empty and sees no greater meaning in life. You may be able to perform a fulfilling mission and do your own work in the transformation of society and in the lives of patients.

Which NGOs need help?

To make a difference in your community and help change the reality of patients who have been diagnosed with cancer, it is possible to work in entities with different goals across the country. Here are some initiatives that you can donate or volunteer to:

Fundação Laço Rosa

The group fights to help women who are suffering from breast cancer. It offers information, love and receives donations of hair for wigs (by the Strength in the Wig project).

Support Group for Adolescent and Child with Cancer (GRAAC)

The organization works to combat childhood cancer. It has a reference hospital for the treatment of the disease, especially for cases of high complexity.

Abrace (Embrace)

It is an organization that provides social assistance for children and adolescents with cancer and hematological diseases.
